Across the Southern Lakes and Central Otago, dry, free-draining soils are the norm, not the exception. Many gardens rely on minimal irrigation, and exposed sites can challenge even the toughest species.
To help clients choose with confidence, we’re introducing a new monthly series highlighting plants that thrive in specific local conditions.
This month: reliable shrubs for non‑irrigated or dry zones.
These proven performers handle low water, wind, frost and the lean soils typical of our region.
Coprosma propinqua (pictured above)
A hardy, twiggy native that excels in dry, exposed environments. Its fine structure adds movement and texture, and it is one of the most reliable options for tough, un-irrigated sites.
A compact kōwhai with intricate branching and bright yellow spring flowers. Excellent for structure and form in dry gardens, and a favourite for adding architectural interest.
An iconic divaricate with a sculptural, airy framework. Highly drought‑tolerant once established and ideal for modern, low‑water landscapes.
One of the most versatile shrubs for Central Otago. Hardy, wind‑tolerant and excellent for hedging or structure. Most Corokia cultivars perform exceptionally well in dry, exposed sites.
Fast‑growing, tough and dependable. Its wavy, olive‑green foliage makes it a standout shelter shrub, especially in windy or free‑draining areas.
Matching the right shrub to the right site is one of the simplest ways to create resilient, low‑maintenance gardens across our region. These species not only survive, they thrive in the dry conditions that define much of Central Otago.
