Muehlenbeckia astonii, commonly known as Shrubby Tororaro, is a distinctive NZ native with a wiry, interlacing divaricating habit that creates exceptional texture in the landscape. Its small, bright-green leaves dot the fine branch structure, giving the plant a delicate yet architectural appearance. Highly valued in modern and native landscaping, it makes an excellent topiary, hedge or sculptural feature, and provides habitat for insects and lizards.

Reaching around 2m tall and 1.5m wide, Shrubby Tororaro thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free-draining soils. Deciduous and extremely hardy, it tolerates dry conditions, coastal exposure and challenging sites, performing reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago.
