Coprosma rugosa (needle-leaved mountain coprosma)

Coprosma rugosa is a compact, upright NZ native shrub known for its striking orange-to-chocolate brown interlaced foliage, which brings rich colour and texture to the landscape. Its fine, needle-like leaves and dense branching create a naturally tidy form, while blue berries in autumn add seasonal interest and attract birds.

Growing to around 3m tall and 2m wide, Coprosma rugosa thrives in full sun, partial shade or even full shade and is exceptionally hardy--naturally found in subalpine environments. It tolerates dry, cold and exposed conditions, making it ideal for Queenstown and Central Otago gardens. Evergreen and fast to medium growing, it is excellent for dry areas, native plantings, shelter, and low-maintenance structure.
