Carex secta (swamp sedge)

Queenstown Nursery

Carex secta, commonly known as Swamp Sedge, is a large, fast-growing NZ native tussock widely used in wetland and riparian landscapes. Its bright green, arching foliage forms a full, fountain-like clump that brings strong texture and movement to stream edges, ponds and damp garden areas. Over many years, older foliage can form distinctive "trunks," lifting the plant above the ground and adding character. With a substantial root system, it is excellent for stabilising drains, wetlands and stream banks, helping prevent erosion.

Reaching around 1.5m tall and 1.5m wide, Carex secta grows quickly and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers consistently wet soils and performs reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago. Evergreen and hardy, it is equally suited to restoration projects and ornamental plantings where bold structure and ecological value are desired.

Choose Carex secta for a robust NZ native that delivers scale, movement and exceptional performance in wet or riparian settings.
