Carex buchananii (leatherleaf sedge)
Queenstown Nursery
Carex buchananii is a compact NZ native sedge forming an upright tuft of fine, hair-like foliage in a distinctive cinnamon-brown tone. The slender leaves curl and bleach slightly at the tips, giving the plant a soft, textural look that moves beautifully in the wind. Evergreen and low-maintenance, it brings warm colour and fine texture to modern landscapes, native plantings or mass-planted borders.
Reaching around 0.6m tall and 0.4m wide, Carex buchananii grows quickly and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It performs best in moist, well-drained soils and is hardy across Queenstown and Central Otago, tolerating wind and cold once established. Its tidy form and rich colour make it an excellent choice for contrast planting, gravel gardens or softening hard edges.
Choose Carex buchananii for a warm-toned NZ native that delivers movement, texture and year-round structure in a compact, easy-care form.
