Chionochloa rubra (red tussock)
Queenstown Nursery
Chionochloa rubra, commonly known as Red Tussock, is a large and distinctive NZ native tussock with flowing, red-tinged foliage that creates strong movement and presence in the landscape. Its arching form is especially striking in exposed, windy sites, where the foliage ripples and shifts with the weather. Tolerant of damp and infertile soils, it performs best in cooler climates and brings an authentic high-country character to both restoration and ornamental plantings. From February to April, attractive seedheads rise above the foliage, adding seasonal interest.
Reaching around 1m tall and 1.2m wide, Chionochloa rubra grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Hardy across Queenstown and Central Otago, it suits wetland edges, open landscapes and large garden spaces where its colour and form can be fully appreciated. Its resilience and distinctive texture make it a standout feature plant.
Choose Chionochloa rubra for a bold NZ native tussock that delivers movement, colour and a strong sense of place in cooler, exposed environments.
