Carex virgata (swamp sedge)
Queenstown Nursery
Carex virgata, commonly known as Swamp Sedge, is a vigorous NZ native tussock ideal for swamps, drain margins and wet pastures. It is a successful colonising species widely used in wetland planting and revegetation, forming upright, fine-textured clumps that stabilise soil and add natural structure. More dry-tolerant and shorter than Carex secta, it performs well in sites that fluctuate between very wet and very dry conditions. Evergreen and hardy, it brings resilience and ecological value to both restoration and ornamental landscapes.
Reaching around 1m tall and 0.5m wide, Carex virgata grows quickly and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist soils but tolerates seasonal drying, making it reliable across Queenstown and Central Otago. Its tidy form and adaptability make it an excellent choice for riparian edges, wetland projects and naturalistic garden plantings.
Choose Carex virgata for a tough, fast-growing NZ native that excels in variable moisture conditions and supports healthy wetland ecosystems.
