Carex trifida (mutton bird sedge)
Queenstown Nursery
Carex trifida, commonly known as Mutton Bird Sedge, is a bold NZ native tussock with wide, pale-green leaves that create strong texture and form in the landscape. Its broad, arching foliage gives it a lush, coastal character, making it ideal for marshy ground, pond edges and stream margins. Naturally found in coastal and swamp environments, it thrives in moist, well-drained soils and brings a robust, structural presence to both restoration and ornamental plantings.
Reaching around 1m tall and 1m wide, Carex trifida grows quickly and performs well in full sun to partial shade. Hardy and adaptable across Queenstown and Central Otago, it tolerates wet conditions while maintaining a tidy, architectural shape. Its scale and colour make it an excellent choice for adding contrast, stabilising damp soils and creating a naturalistic wetland look.
Choose Carex trifida for a strong, textural NZ native that excels in moist sites and delivers year-round structure and resilience.
