Carex maorica is a graceful NZ native sedge naturally found in swampy and wetland areas. It forms upright, arching clumps of fine green foliage that bring soft texture and movement to riparian plantings, regeneration projects and ornamental ponds. Its structure provides habitat value, and the seed heads are attractive to birds. Evergreen and hardy, it performs beautifully in damp, naturalistic landscapes.

Reaching around 1m tall and 0.5m wide, Carex maorica grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers consistently wet soils and can even be planted directly into shallow water, making it ideal for stream edges, pond margins and wetland restoration across Queenstown and Central Otago. Its tidy form and ecological benefits make it a versatile choice for both restoration and garden settings.
