Pseudopanax ferox (fierce lancewood)

Queenstown Nursery

Pseudopanax ferox, commonly known as Fierce Lancewood, is a spectacular slow-growing NZ native prized for its dramatic juvenile form. Young plants display narrow, saw-like brown leaves with pronounced serration, creating a bold architectural silhouette ideal for modern landscapes or tight spaces. As it matures, it develops a clean, slender trunk topped with a bushy crown of broader adult foliage, offering a completely different but equally striking appearance. Small flowers attract pollinators, adding ecological value.

Reaching around 5m tall and 2m wide, Pseudopanax ferox grows slowly and thrives in full sun, partial shade or full shade. Hardier than P. crassifolius, it performs reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago once established, though like all Lancewoods it benefits from frost protection when young. Evergreen and sculptural, it provides year-round structure and strong visual impact.

Choose Pseudopanax ferox for a compact, architectural NZ native that delivers fierce juvenile foliage, a tidy mature form and excellent resilience in a wide range of landscape settings.
