Pseudopanax crassifolius (lancewood)

Queenstown Nursery

Pseudopanax crassifolius, commonly known as Lancewood, is a striking NZ native valued for its dramatic juvenile form. Young plants feature long, narrow, softly serrated green leaves that hang downward, creating a bold architectural silhouette ideal for modern landscapes or small spaces. As the tree matures, it develops a clean, slender trunk topped with a rounded crown of broader adult foliage, giving it a completely different appearance over time. Small flowers attract pollinators, adding ecological value.

Reaching around 12m tall and 3m wide, Lancewood grows at a medium to slow rate and thrives in full sun, partial shade or even full shade. Hardy and adaptable across Queenstown and Central Otago, it is frost tender when young but becomes increasingly resilient with age. Its unique form, evergreen foliage and strong structural presence make it an excellent specimen tree for native or contemporary plantings.

Choose Pseudopanax crassifolius for a sculptural NZ native that offers dramatic juvenile architecture, a graceful adult form and year-round visual interest.
