Podocarpus totara
Queenstown Nursery
Podocarpus tōtara, commonly known as Tōtara, is an iconic NZ native tree valued both as an attractive specimen and for its exceptionally durable timber. Its dense, fine foliage and strong branching structure make it suitable for shelter, screening or clipping into a formal hedge. From March to May it produces fleshy fruit that attract birds, while nectar from October to December supports pollinators. Hardy and adaptable, it grows well across a wide range of sites, including exposed or partially shaded positions.
Reaching around 15m tall and 8m wide, Tōtara grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Frost tender when young, it becomes increasingly hardy with age and performs reliably throughout Queenstown and Central Otago. Long lived and structurally strong, it is an excellent choice for native plantings, shelter belts or as a stately specimen tree.
Choose Podocarpus tōtara for a resilient NZ native that offers year-round structure, wildlife value and outstanding performance in both exposed and mixed landscape settings.
