Pennantia corymbosa

Queenstown Nursery

Pennantia corymbosa, commonly known as the Bellbird Tree, is an attractive NZ native small tree with a slender, elegant habit. It begins life with a divaricating juvenile form before maturing into a glossy, larger-leaved adult tree. In spring it produces clusters of fragrant white flowers, followed from January to April by black fruit that are highly attractive to birds - especially bellbirds, which give the tree its common name. Traditionally, Māori used the wood for fire-starting due to its fine, dry texture.

Reaching around 8m tall and 3m wide, Pennantia corymbosa grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Shade-tolerant, evergreen and hardy, it performs reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago when given some shelter from extreme exposure. Its graceful form, glossy foliage and strong wildlife value make it an excellent choice for native plantings, mixed borders or as a refined specimen tree.

Choose Pennantia corymbosa for a graceful NZ native that offers fragrant flowers, bird-attracting fruit and elegant structure throughout the year.
