Plagianthus divaricatus (salt marsh ribbonwood)

Queenstown Nursery

Plagianthus divaricatus, commonly known as Salt Marsh Ribbonwood, is a dense, tangled NZ native shrub with fine silvery stems and small green leaves. Its compact, interlaced branching gives it a distinctive texture, making it excellent for clipped hedges, low shelter or structural planting. In spring it produces small cream flowers that are surprisingly sweetly scented, adding subtle seasonal interest.

Reaching around 2m tall and 2m wide, this species grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Exceptionally tolerant of salt, wind and wet or swampy soils, it is ideal for coastal, exposed or difficult sites across Queenstown and Central Otago. Semi-deciduous and hardy, it establishes well and provides reliable form and resilience in challenging conditions.

Choose Plagianthus divaricatus for a tough NZ native that offers fine silvery foliage, sweet spring flowers and excellent performance as a hedge or low shelter in exposed or coastal landscapes.
