Ozothamnus leptophyllus (cottonwood)

Queenstown Nursery

Ozothamnus leptophyllus, commonly known as Cottonwood, is a rapid-growing NZ native shrub and a prolific coloniser of dry, exposed sites. Its fine, dense foliage ranges from green to gold, creating a soft, textural effect that works beautifully in modern and native landscapes. In spring and summer it produces clusters of scented, large flower heads that add brightness and attract pollinators.

Reaching around 2m tall and wide, Cottonwood thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free-draining soils. Hardy, evergreen and extremely tolerant of wind and drought, it performs reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago. Regular trimming enhances its form, making it ideal for hedging, structure or adding contrast in mixed plantings.

Choose Ozothamnus leptophyllus for a resilient, fast-establishing NZ native shrub that delivers fine foliage texture, scented seasonal flowers and excellent performance in dry, exposed garden settings.
