Lophozonia menziesii (silver beech)
Queenstown Nursery
Lophozonia menziesii, syn. Nothofagus menziesii, commonly known as Silver Beech, is a tall and attractive NZ native tree recognised for its smooth silver-grey bark and fine, dark foliage. It forms a dense, elegant canopy and is well suited to cool, moist sites at higher altitudes or in southern regions. The species produces strong, deep-red timber and can be clipped into a refined hedge where space allows.
Reaching around 25m tall and 5m wide, Silver Beech grows at a medium rate and performs best in sheltered positions with consistent moisture and well-drained soils. Evergreen and hardy, it is a long-lived structural tree ideal for native plantings, shelter, or as a stately specimen across suitable parts of Queenstown and Central Otago.
Choose Lophozonia menziesii for a graceful NZ native that offers silver bark, fine evergreen foliage and excellent performance in cool, moist, sheltered landscapes.
