Fuscospora solandri (black beech)

Queenstown Nursery

Fuscospora solandri, commonly known as Black Beech or Tāwhero, is an attractive NZ native tree recognised for its sculptural black bark and fine, dark green rounded leaves. Its upright, elegant form makes it a striking feature in native plantings, and it can also be clipped into a refined, formal hedge. More wind-tolerant than other native beeches, it performs well in exposed or drier eastern sites.

Reaching around 20m tall and 5m wide, Black Beech prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soils at lower altitudes. Hardy and long-lived, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and offers steady, medium growth. Its tidy structure and resilience make it a valuable choice for shelter, screening or as a stately specimen tree across Queenstown and Central Otago.

Choose Fuscospora solandri for a hardy NZ native that delivers strong structure, distinctive bark, and excellent performance in drier, well-drained landscapes.
