Fuscospora fusca (red beech)

Queenstown Nursery

Fuscospora fusca, commonly known as Red Beech or Tāwhero, is a handsome NZ native tree valued for its strong form, durable timber and rich seasonal colour. Young trees display striking bright'red foliage during winter, maturing into a tall, elegant specimen with a dense canopy. It produces small seed capsules that support native wildlife, and its naturally upright habit allows it to be clipped into a tall, formal hedge where space permits.

Reaching around 30m tall and 5m wide, Red Beech prefers cool, moist, sheltered sites with deep, well-drained soils. It shows rapid early growth and becomes a long-lived, hardy feature once established. Suitable for native plantings, shelter, timber value or as a stately specimen tree across Queenstown and Central Otago when given adequate moisture and protection from harsh exposure.

Choose Fuscospora fusca for a majestic NZ native that delivers winter colour, strong structure, durable timber and excellent long-term performance in cool, sheltered landscapes.
