Aristotelia serrata (wineberry)

Queenstown Nursery

Aristotelia serrata, commonly known as Wineberry or Makomako, is a fast-growing NZ native small tree valued for its soft, airy form and strong seasonal interest. In spring it produces masses of attractive rose-coloured flowers, followed in summer by clusters of black berries that are highly sought after by native birds. Its light canopy makes it an excellent shade tree in sheltered areas, adding height and movement to native plantings.

Reaching around 6m tall and 3m wide, Wineberry thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils. Frost-tender when young, it becomes hardy once established and performs reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago when given some shelter in its early years. Deciduous, it brings a dynamic, seasonal character to the landscape.

Choose Aristotelia serrata for a fast-establishing NZ native that delivers spring flowers, summer berries, bird habitat and graceful shade in sheltered garden settings.
