Sophora microphylla (kowhai)
Sophora microphylla, commonly known as Kōwhai, is a graceful NZ native small tree with fine, fern-like foliage and a distinctive tangled juvenile stage that gradually matures into a stately, open-branched adult form. From September to November it produces masses of bright yellow, nectar-rich flowers that are highly attractive to birds, especially tūī and bellbirds. Semi-deciduous and hardy, it brings strong seasonal interest and wildlife value to any landscape.
Reaching around 8m tall and 3m wide, Sophora microphylla grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun, partial shade or full shade. It performs reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago, offering resilience, structure and a spectacular spring display. Its elegant form and iconic flowers make it ideal for native gardens, specimen planting or mixed borders.
Choose Sophora microphylla for a classic NZ native that delivers vibrant spring colour, fine foliage and excellent bird habitat.
