Acaena inermis purpurea (purple bidibidi)

Queenstown Nursery

Acaena inermis 'Purpurea' is a low-growing NZ native groundcover prized for its rich purple foliage and dense, spreading habit. This hardy, mat forming perennial performs reliably in Queenstown and Central Otago gardens, adding bold colour and texture to borders, rock gardens, pathways and modern landscape designs. Its fine, fern'like leaves create a soft carpet that contrasts beautifully with greens, silvers and native grasses.

'Purpurea' typically grows to 5-10cm tall and spreads 50-80cm wide, forming a tight, weed suppressing mat. It thrives in full sun to part shade, tolerates dry conditions once established, and is well-suited to exposed or challenging sites. Small burr-free flower heads appear in summer, making it a safe, low-maintenance option for residential gardens and commercial landscaping projects.

Choose Acaena inermis 'Purpurea' for a colourful, drought-tolerant native groundcover that delivers strong visual impact and dependable performance in Central Otago landscapes.
