Coprosma acerosa (sand coprosma)

Queenstown Nursery

Coprosma acerosa is a tough, trailing NZ native shrub known for its fine, tangled stems and naturally spreading, ground-hugging habit. Well-suited to Queenstown and Central Otago conditions, it offers excellent drought tolerance and year-round structure. Its bronze-green foliage and weaving form make it ideal for native gardens, coastal-style plantings, rock gardens and erosion-control areas.

This hardy species typically grows 20-40cm tall and spreads 1-2m wide, forming a dense, interlacing mat that helps suppress weeds and stabilise soil on banks or exposed sites. Coprosma acerosa thrives in full sun, tolerates wind, frost and dry conditions, and performs reliably in challenging landscapes where resilience is essential.

Choose Coprosma acerosa for a low-maintenance, climate-tolerant NZ native groundcover that delivers texture, durability and strong performance in Central Otago landscapes.
