Festuca novae-zelandiae (hard tussock)

Queenstown Nursery

Festuca novae-zelandiae, commonly known as Hard Tussock, is a fine-leaved, tawny NZ native tussock with an upright, tidy habit. A characteristic species of low tussock grasslands across the dry, windy and cold plains of Canterbury and Otago, it brings an authentic high-country look to both restoration and ornamental landscapes. Its slender foliage creates soft movement and subtle colour variation throughout the year. Evergreen and hardy, it thrives in exposed, nutrient'poor environments.

Reaching around 0.7m tall and 0.7m wide, Festuca novae-zelandiae grows at a medium rate and performs best in full sun, tolerating partial shade. It is highly tolerant of poor soils and dry conditions, making it reliable across Queenstown and Central Otago. Its understated form and resilience make it ideal for mass planting, gravel gardens, naturalistic designs and ecological restoration.

Choose Festuca novae-zelandiae for a tough, fine'textured NZ native tussock that delivers movement, structure and a true sense of place in dry, exposed landscapes.
