Plagianthus regius (lowland ribbonwood)
Queenstown Nursery
Plagianthus regius, commonly known as Lowland Ribbonwood, is a medium-sized NZ native tree with a spreading, wind-resistant form and attractive seasonal interest. Juvenile plants feature small, divaricating foliage that gradually transitions into larger, birch-like adult leaves. In spring it produces showy cream flowers, making it a standout specimen as well as a highly effective shelter tree.
Reaching around 12m tall and 4m wide, Lowland Ribbonwood grows at a medium to fast rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Hardy and adaptable, it performs well even on exposed sites across Queenstown and Central Otago. Semi-deciduous and quick to establish, it is ideal for shelter belts, native plantings or as a graceful structural tree in larger gardens.
Choose Plagianthus regius for a fast-growing NZ native that offers elegant foliage, spring flowers and excellent resilience in exposed or challenging conditions.
