Melicytus chathamicus

Queenstown Nursery

Melicytus chathamicus is a distinctive NZ native small tree naturally found on the Chatham Islands. It features large, green, oval leaves and a dense, narrow juvenile form that can be maintained with clipping, or allowed to mature into a small, spreading tree. In spring it produces small yellow flowers, followed by attractive fruit that range from white flecked with purple to deep purple or black, appearing from September through to April.

Reaching around 6m tall and 3m wide, this species grows at a medium rate and thrives in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates cold, wind and coastal exposure, performing reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago when protected from heavy frost. Evergreen and resilient, it offers strong structure and long seasonal interest through its extended fruiting period.

Choose Melicytus chathamicus for a hardy NZ native that provides lush foliage, spring flowers and colourful fruit, along with excellent tolerance for coastal and exposed sites.
