Fuscospora solandri var. cliffortioides, commonly known as Mountain Beech, is a graceful medium-sized NZ native tree with a finer leaf and more compact habit than standard Black Beech. Its upright, elegant structure and small, dark foliage give it a refined, textural presence in native plantings and high-country landscapes. Extremely hardy, it is well adapted to cold, exposed and nutrient-poor alpine environments.

Reaching around 12m tall and 5m wide, Mountain Beech grows at a steady medium rate and performs reliably in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates poor soils, wind and challenging high-altitude conditions, making it one of the most resilient native beeches for Queenstown and Central Otago. Its tidy, upright form also allows it to be clipped into a formal hedge where desired.
