Cordyline australis (cabbage tree)
Queenstown Nursery
Cordyline australis, commonly known as the Cabbage Tree or Tī Kōuka, is an iconic NZ native tree recognised for its tall, slender trunk and distinctive clusters of long, narrow, arching leaves. Its strong architectural form makes it a standout feature in both native and contemporary landscapes. In early summer it produces large sprays of fragrant white flowers, followed by bluish-white berries that attract birds.
Reaching 10m tall over time, Cordyline australis thrives in full sun to partial shade and is exceptionally hardy. It tolerates wind, frost, coastal exposure and periods of drought, making it one of the most adaptable natives for Queenstown and Central Otago. Its deep root system also makes it valuable for stabilising banks and wet areas.
Choose Cordyline australis for a resilient, sculptural NZ native that delivers year-round structure, summer fragrance and strong wildlife value in a wide range of garden and landscape settings.
