Carpodetus serratus (marbleleaf)

Queenstown Nursery

Carpodetus serratus, commonly known as Marbleleaf or putaputawētā, is a distinctive NZ native tree valued for its striking marbled foliage and strong juvenile form. Young plants develop a tangled, divaricating structure that gradually matures into an attractive small tree with larger, glossy leaves. In summer it produces clusters of white flowers, followed by purple fruit that ripen to black from March to May, providing food for native birds.

Reaching around 10m tall and 4m wide, Marbleleaf performs best in moist, semi-shaded sites with shelter from strong wind. It is intolerant of drought and can be frost-tender when young, but becomes more resilient as it matures. Its unique foliage and branching structure make it an excellent feature tree in native plantings or shaded garden areas across Queenstown and Central Otago when given the right conditions.

Choose Carpodetus serratus for a characterful NZ native that offers marbled foliage, seasonal flowers and fruit, and a distinctive transition from juvenile to mature form.
