Prunus lusitanica (portuguese laurel)

Queenstown Nursery

Prunus lusitanica, commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, is a broadly spreading evergreen tree valued for its glossy dark green foliage and strong structural form. Red young stems carry small cream spring flowers, followed by black berries that add seasonal interest. Its dense habit makes it an excellent screening tree and a popular choice for formal hedging. It also lends itself well to topiary standards for structured garden designs. Note: berries are poisonous to animals.

Reaching around 12m tall and 8m wide, Portuguese Laurel thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well drained soils. It is not tolerant of wet sites but is both cold and drought hardy, performing reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago. With regular trimming, it forms a lush, elegant hedge or privacy screen.

Choose Prunus lusitanica for a classic, hardy exotic that delivers glossy evergreen foliage, strong structure and excellent performance as a hedge, screen or formal topiary feature.
