Olearia traversii (Chatham Island akeake)
Queenstown Nursery
Olearia traversii, commonly known as Chatham Island Akeake, is an upright, fast-growing NZ native tree ideal for hedging, shelter and exposed landscape sites. Its dense, clean structure and grey-green foliage make it a strong choice for creating height and screening in tough environments. Evergreen and reliable, it performs especially well in coastal areas where wind and salt exposure are common.
Reaching around 5m tall and 2.5m wide, Chatham Island Akeake thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free-draining soils. It is intolerant of wet sites but excels in dry, windy and coastal conditions. With tolerance for only light frosts, it is best placed in warm, sheltered microclimates across Queenstown and Central Otago. Once established, it forms a robust, low-maintenance screen or clipped hedge.
Choose Olearia traversii for a fast-establishing, resilient NZ native tree that delivers strong structure, evergreen foliage and excellent performance in dry, exposed or coastal garden settings.
