Lophomyrtus obcordata (Rohutui)
Queenstown Nursery
Lophomyrtus obcordata (Rohutui) is an elegant NZ native shrub or small tree, well-suited to hedging, screening and structured landscape design. It forms an upright, refined shape with fine, shiny red foliage that deepens in colour through the seasons. The smooth, mottled bark - marked with grey and greenish-cream patches - adds extra visual interest, making it an excellent choice for feature planting or a native pleached hedge.
In spring and summer, Rohutui produces white flowers with numerous showy stamens, followed by bright to dark red fruit (sometimes black) that attract birds. Reaching around 5m tall and 2.5m wide, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free-draining soils. Hardy, evergreen and reliable across Queenstown and Central Otago, it offers year-round structure with strong seasonal highlights.
Choose Lophomyrtus obcordata for a striking, versatile NZ native that delivers fine red foliage, attractive bark, bird-friendly fruit and excellent performance as a hedge, screen or small specimen tree.
