Haloragis erecta
Queenstown Nursery
Haloragis erecta, commonly known as Toatoa or Fireweed, is a striking NZ native shrub valued for its bronze-coloured, saw-toothed foliage. The green-yellow flowers are small and inconspicuous, but the plant's bold leaf colour and texture make it an excellent choice for adding contrast and depth to native or mixed plantings. Its spreading form also makes it ideal for planting beneath larger trees or as a backdrop for smaller shrubs and perennials.
Reaching around 1.5m tall and 3m wide, Haloragis erecta thrives in full sun to partial shade and performs well in free-draining soils. Hardy and low-maintenance, it grows reliably across Queenstown and Central Otago, offering year-round colour and structure. Its wide, bushy habit helps fill space quickly, making it useful for mass planting or naturalistic designs.
Choose Haloragis erecta for a bold, textural NZ native shrub that brings warm bronze tones, strong form and dependable performance to a variety of landscape settings.
