Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea (Japanese barberry)
Queenstown Nursery
Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea (Japanese Barberry) is a tough, low-maintenance deciduous shrub known for its rich dark red-purple foliage and excellent year-round interest. In mid-spring it produces small pale-yellow flowers flushed with red, which contrast beautifully with the deep foliage. In autumn the leaves turn brilliant red before falling, adding strong seasonal colour to the landscape.
Growing to around 3m tall and 2m wide, this hardy Barberry is one of the easiest deciduous varieties to grow. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, tolerates a wide range of soils, and performs reliably in Queenstown and Central Otago conditions. Its thorny stems also make it useful for barrier planting or areas where you want to discourage pets or foot traffic.
Choose Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea for a resilient, colourful feature shrub that delivers structure, contrast and dependable performance throughout the seasons.
