Muehlenbeckia axillaris (creeping wire vine)
Queenstown Nursery
Muehlenbeckia axillaris (Creeping Wire Vine) is a hardy, low-growing NZ native groundcover known for its fine wiry stems and small dark-green leaves. This dense, mat-forming plant performs reliably in Queenstown and Central Otago gardens, offering excellent drought tolerance and year-round texture. In summer it produces masses of small creamy flowers that add subtle seasonal interest.
This compact groundcover typically grows to around 20cm tall and spreads up to 1m wide, forming a tight, weed-suppressing carpet. It thrives in full sun, tolerates hot, dry conditions, and is more restrained in growth than Muehlenbeckia complexa. Semi-deciduous in colder climates, it remains a dependable choice for rock gardens, borders, banks and low-maintenance landscape designs.
Choose Muehlenbeckia axillaris for a tough, attractive NZ native groundcover that delivers resilience, coverage and strong performance in Central Otago landscapes.
