Phormium tenax purpurea (purple flax)

Queenstown Nursery

Phormium tenax 'Purpurea' is a dramatic NZ native flax featuring deep bronze-purple foliage and a strong upright habit. Its rich colour and bold form make it a standout feature in Queenstown and Central Otago gardens, adding contrast and structure to native plantings, modern landscapes and large borders. This variety is especially effective in mass planting or as a statement specimen.

'Purpurea' typically grows to 2-3m tall and 2-3m wide, forming a robust clump that provides year-round impact. It thrives in full sun, tolerates wind, frost and dry conditions, and performs reliably in exposed or difficult sites. Its combination of colour, height and durability makes it ideal for both residential and commercial landscaping projects.

Choose Phormium tenax 'Purpurea' for a tough, colourful NZ flax that brings strong visual contrast and dependable performance to Central Otago landscapes.
