Phormium cookianum (mountain flax)

Queenstown Nursery

Phormium cookianum is a graceful NZ native flax known for its arching, soft green leaves and reliable performance in a wide range of landscapes. This hardy species thrives in Queenstown and Central Otago conditions, offering year-round structure and movement. Its elegant, weeping form makes it ideal for native gardens, modern landscape designs, mass planting, bank stabilisation and low-maintenance residential plantings.

Phormium cookianum typically grows to 1-1.5m tall and 1.5-2m wide, forming a broad, flowing clump that softens hard edges and adds natural texture to the garden. It performs well in full sun to part shade, tolerates wind, frost and dry conditions once established, and is highly adaptable to exposed or challenging sites.

Choose Phormium cookianum for a resilient, easy-care NZ native flax that delivers movement, structure and dependable performance in Central Otago landscapes.
