Austroderia richardii (south island toe toe)

Queenstown Nursery

Austroderia richardii is a striking NZ native toetoe known for its tall, elegant flower plumes and strong, upright foliage. Unlike exotic pampas, this species is non-invasive and well-suited to Queenstown and Central Otago landscapes. Its golden-cream flower heads appear from late spring to summer, adding height, movement and texture to native plantings, shelter belts and large garden borders.

This hardy grass typically grows to 1-1.5m in foliage, with mature flower plumes reaching up to 2.5-3m, forming a wide, arching clump. It thrives in full sun, tolerates wind and dry conditions once established, and performs reliably in exposed or challenging sites. Austroderia richardii is ideal for residential gardens, lifestyle blocks and commercial landscaping projects seeking a bold, low'maintenance native feature.

Choose Austroderia richardii for a resilient, drought-tolerant NZ toetoe that delivers height, movement and strong year-round presence in Central Otago conditions.
