Plant Focus: Plants That Handle Both Wet and Dry Conditions

Central Otago’s winter soils can swing wildly: waterlogged after rain, then suddenly dry. Choosing plants that can cope with both ends of the moisture spectrum is one of the simplest ways to keep a garden looking tidy and resilient year‑round.

Two hardy natives stand out for their ability to shift effortlessly between wet and dry conditions:

Austroderia richardii (Toetoe)

Tall, elegant and incredibly tough, toetoe thrives along damp stream margins yet handles exposed, free‑draining sites just as confidently. Its upright plumes add height, movement and structure to both naturalistic and contemporary landscapes.

Juncus edgariae (Wiwi)

One of the most adaptable natives you can plant. Wiwi moves easily between wetland conditions and drought, forming clean, upright clumps that stay tidy through every season. It’s a favourite for riparian edges, roadside plantings and anywhere moisture levels fluctuate.

If your garden flips between extremes, these two species will take it in stride. No fuss, no constant adjustment, just reliable structure and year‑round resilience.
