Pittosporum tenuifolium (black matipo)
Queenstown Nursery
Pittosporum tenuifolium, commonly known as Black Matipo, is a versatile NZ native shrub or small tree valued for its dense, attractive foliage and sweetly scented flowers. Its upright habit and fine texture make it ideal for lower-tier farm shelter, suburban privacy screening and native revegetation projects. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, adding ecological value to any planting.
Reaching around 6m tall and 2m wide, Black Matipo thrives in full sun to partial shade and is exceptionally hardy. It tolerates wind, drought, frost and coastal conditions, making it one of the most adaptable natives for Queenstown and Central Otago landscapes. Evergreen and very frost hardy, it forms a reliable, easily maintained hedge or shelterbelt.
Choose Pittosporum tenuifolium for a resilient, multi-purpose NZ native that delivers dense foliage, scented flowers and outstanding performance in shelter, screening and revegetation plantings.
